Strengthening Couples' Relationships After TBI at the BIAV 2014 Conference
We are pleased to report that Drs. Herman Lukow and Emilie Godwin were well received at the Brain Injury Association of Virginia (BIAV) annual conference last March. The conference itself was a great success with over 200 attendees.
They gave a late afternoon presentation titled, "Strengthening Couples' Relationships After TBI," covering the primary challenges couples face after TBI. These include changes in responsibilities, relationship roles, and communication styles. The main focus, then, was strategies that couples can use to improve their relationships after brain injury by anticipating challenges and having a plan for how to navigate them more effectively.
Audience evaluations were all very positive, and both Dr. Lukow and Dr. Godwin are very appreciative of the opportunity to donate both their time and knowledge to an advocacy group such as the BIAV. Together, we all help to improve the lives of people who have experienced TBI.
Many of the strategies that were discussed in their presentation are part of the Therapeutic Couples Intervention (TCI). The TCI is a program for couples after brain injury currently being evaluated for it's helpfulness as an outpatient rehabilitation program. Over five to six sessions, couples are provided with information on brain injury, local resources, skill development, and healthy coping strategies. Sessions also work towards developing healthy communication, managing stress, setting goals, rebuilding intimacy, and strategies for parenting (if applicable).
